My name is Johanne Brochu and I am an online teacher at the Consortium d’apprentissage virtuel de langue française de l’Ontario (CAVLFO).
My background is in French literature and in education. I decided to get into this career while I was living in Greece, teaching private lessons to young kids. I became aware that I could have been employed in an international school at the time if I had a teaching diploma. Since I loved travelling and teaching, I thought that it would be fantastic if I could combine both and make it a career, which I did.
I have taught in Quebec City, where I come from and where almost my entire family lives. I have also taught in Schefferville, Labrador, to native people (Montagnais and Naskapis), as well as in Baton Rouge, La., and in Ontario where I now live. My experience is mostly with high school students (grades 9 to 12) but I have some elementary teaching experience in Labrador and in Louisiana (grades 4, 5 and 6). For a few years I taught beginner, intermediate and advanced levels in a summer high school immersion program in Quebec City.
During my career, I have been involved in different projects (on the French side) which gave me the opportunity to work on provincial testing at the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) (texts and questions authors, notation leader), on 2007 curriculum development at the Ontario Ministry of Education and at the Centre franco-ontarien de ressources pédagogiques (CFORP), at developing courses and recently reviewing an online course. At the CFORP, I also had the opportunity to author two French textbooks with teachers’ guides that are used in French high schools in Ontario (grades 9 and 11). I am particularly proud of this last accomplishment, which took two school years to complete.
I got involved in the Master of Educational Technology (MET) program after I realized that it was important to improve my skills in educational technology. I am thrilled with my learning journey so far.
One of my interests is to develop the courses I am teaching by making better use of new technology so that my students can acquire the skills they need to pursue their personal and professional goals. My other interests are in special-needs education, particularly involving students with disabilities for whom the transition from high school to real life poses great challenges. I also plan on getting involved in designing courses or online programs for people with special needs and/or with disabilities, or for other people in need, possibly at a humanitarian level locally or in other parts of the world. In my personal life, I am also very much interested in writing novels.
